LOCHYSIDE Primary School’s final fete in its current campus raised a record-breaking £ 5,500.

Staff and pupils pulled out all the stops to make the event a fitting celebration of the school’s 54-year history.

The school will be moving to a new campus at Caol after the summer break when it will be re-named St Columba RC Primary.

The money raised at the fete, on Thursday May 26, will go to school funds.

Lochyside head teacher Violet Smith said: ‘This was the last fete at our school as we will be moving to our new school campus in September. The weather was fantastic and we had a huge crowd of people from the local community. It was a very sociable occasion.

‘ We had lots of outdoor activities for the children as well as stalls in the hall.

‘There were many highlights including Lochaber High School Wind Band which played some amazing music in the outdoor garden, Lochaber Pipe Band, and the ever-popular Wheel of Fortune.

‘Nevis Radio broadcast its programme live from the fete. We were delighted to raise a record total of £ 5,500 for school funds. This is a remarkable amount of money and we are extremely grateful to the local businesses and others who so generously supported the event. It was a nostalgic evening for many of the people who attended as they shared their memories of the school over the past 52 years.’

There is still a chance to visit the Lochyside school and share memories during an open week.

Ms Smith said: ‘We will be holding an open week from June 20 to 24. We hope former pupils, staff and parents will come along to the school where there will be an opportunity to look at photographic displays and memorabilia from 1964 to the present time.’
