Young­sters shine at school sports

YOUNG ath­letes from seven Ar­gyll pri­mary schools had great fun at their sum­mer sports days last week.

Strath of Ap­pin Pri­mary School held a joint sports day with Achaleven, Kilchre­nan, Bar­cal­dine and Lis­more Pri­maries on Tues­day May 31.

Spe­cial guest at the event was Wilma Lawrie, the gold, sil­ver and bronze par­a­lympic swim­mer who had trav­elled from Ed­in­burgh to present cer­tifi­cates to the best boy and girl in each year group and the nurs­ery.

Com­ment­ing on the event, act­ing head teacher Chris­tine Ma­cLean said: ‘It was a fun­filled event en­joyed by all. The plan­ning and prepa­ra­tion all paid off and the par­ent coun­cil kept ev­ery­one re­freshed with tea and cof­fee and de­li­cious home bak­ing through­out the day.’

Also on Tues­day, Rock­field Pri­mary held their sports day.

The school’s head teacher, Caro­line Fothergill said: ‘ We were de­lighted to host our an­nual sports day, which is a real com­mu­nity event for Rock­field.

‘The chil­dren did us proud with their en­thu­si­asm, good sports­man­ship and rep­re­sent­ing the school so pos­i­tively.’

Mean­while, Park Pri­mary had its sports day on Fri­day June 3.

Head teacher Gil­lian Car­ney told The Oban Times that the event was ‘ a highly suc­cess­ful day’.

She went on: ‘It was ex­cel­lent and well sup­ported by par­ents. The sun shone all day and the chil­dren had a great time.’
