Whales and dol­phins in spot­light

BUN-SGOIL Sh­lèite Pri­mary School pupils en­joyed a visit from He­bridean Whale and Dol­phin Trust (HWDT) staff.

P1/3e and P1/4g and their teachers Jan­ice Dougan and Gwen Cul­bert­son took part in the visit on June 7.

A spokesman for the Skye school said: ‘It was a fan­tas­tic visit.’

The pupils mea­sured out the size of a por­poise, bot­tlenose dol­phin and Orca as well as learn­ing about dif­fer­ent sea habi­tats and what kinds of cetaceans live in them.

Pupils were able to han­dle and learn about ear bones, ribs and ver­te­brae, baleen and teeth, from Sperm whales to Minke, from Sei whales to com­mon dol­phins.

Ev­ery­one agreed it was an en­rich­ing ex­pe­ri­ence for staff and pupils.
