Celtic Cup final sees Inveraray take on Kyles
INVERARAY and Kyles Athletic will compete for the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup this Saturday, June 25, at Taynuilt Sports Field.
First contested in 1879 when Glasgow Cowal emerged victors, the tournament is open to all south senior sides playing in shinty’s top three tiers.
Inveraray go into this year’s final as underdogs but they have won the famous trophy 13 times since 1995.
They beat Aberdour 3-1 in this year’s quarter-finals with player/ manager Ruaraidh Graham, Neil Shaw and Lewis Montgomery on target. They then defeated Glasgow Mid Argyll 2-1 in their semi-final tie last month courtesy of goals from Lewis MacNicol and Garry MacPherson.
Holders Kyles Athletic are going for ‘four-in-a-row’ in this competition.
Five-goal Dunkie Kerr helped them to a resounding 12- 0 victory over Bute which secured a semi-final spot against Oban Camanachd.
This was a repeat of last year’s final which Kyles won 4-2. They once again edged out the Mossfield men 2-1 with goals from Sandy MacKenzie and Innes MacDonald securing the chance to retain the trophy.
Archie Robertson from the Glasgow Celtic Society said: ‘We are looking forward to another successful day at Taynuilt after the success of last year’s final. We’d like to thank sponsors Gregor Cameron Consultancy, Taynuilt Sports Council and Taynuilt Shinty Club for their co-operation in the lead up to the big day.’
The Glasgow Celtic Society will once again honour the winning team from 50 years ago.
Kyles Athletic stalwart and captain of the 1966 winning side Chic Jamieson will lead the surviving veterans as they are introduced to the supporters.
A large crowd is expected and with both teams playing attractive shinty, an entertaining encounter is assured.
Throw-up is at 4pm and the match will be broadcast live on BBC Alba.
