Oban hockey team lifts the silverware

-

OBAN Hockey Club’s annual sevens tournament was held earlier this month at Taynuilt sports facility. Over the past four years the tournament has gone from strength to strength. It has proved very popular with both local and visiting players. This year teams from Glasgow as well as Mull’s recently formed hockey club travelled to compete, all eager to pay a visit to sunny Oban. The grass pitch tournament once again proved to be a lot of fun and a great success. It was played in a round robin format with a final between the top two teams at the end of the day.

The heat and humidity proved difficult for all players, unused to such tropical conditions. Despite this, games were intense and hard-fought with a few rivalries forming on the pitch and friendships off.

After four hours of very enjoyable hockey Oban 1 were to face Glasgow High Kelvinside (GHK) in the final. A close game resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Oban team and there was much celebration. After a three-year absence, the trophy had been brought home. Congratulations also go to local players Zeph and Asher Petit, top goalscorers, and Fiona MacLean, player of the tournament. The day ended in good spirits with a well- earned barbeque.

A big thank you must go to Fraser Ingles of Taynuilt sports facility for all the help he provided both leading up to and on the day. It proved to be a fantastic tournament in no small part due to an excellent venue. Hockey will continue over the summer months at the high school 6.458pm on Thursday evenings with all players new and old welcome.

?? ?? A good time was had by all at the recent hockey tournament held at Taynuilt.
