Caol bids farewell to Sister June
A NUN is preparing to return to her homeland after spending three years in Lochaber.
Sister June, originally from New Zealand, has served at St John’s Parish in Caol since 2013 and says she has many cherished memories and has found it enriching to work with different people and learn about different cultures.
‘I have very much enjoyed my time here,’ she said. ‘I don’t think it’s fair to make a comparison between Fort William and New Zealand. The people and the cultures are very different. I have been to places in Scotland which have reminded me of New Zealand, geographically there are similarities, but with the people and the way of life you have to take each place as it is and enjoy what it has to offer.’
She added: ‘ My main role has been accompanying tourists or people who are on pilgrimage. Mary MacKillop started our order and her people are from the area so lots of people come here and Roy Bridge because of her.’
Sister June leaves Caol on July 1 but is looking forward to catching up with family in the UK before returning to New Zealand on August 9.
‘I will go back with lots of fond memories about the people I have met and the friends I have made here.
Father Roddy McAuley said: ‘Sister June has been involved in a great deal of things in the three years she has been here.
‘ We gave her a special Scottish necklace as a gift for all she has done.’
