Moira gets ready for the high life at nearly 80
A 79-YEAR- OLD grandmother will abseil from 1,300ft next month in order to raise money for charity.
Super-gran Moira Thomson decided to join her granddaughter and the rest of the staff of Specsavers in Oban in abseiling down Cruachan Dam so that she could tick the activity off of her bucket list.
Moira, who will turn 80 in November, said: ‘I’m quite looking forward to it. It’s something I have wanted to do and if I can raise money for charity, even better. I wanted to raise money for a small Scottish charity and help some kids.
‘My grandson thinks I shouldn’t do it but I am doing it and that’s it. I will have a harness on, so I’m not worried.
‘Everyone has been so kind. It’s unbelievable the amount of money that has been donated.
‘I think my age is making people give more as they think you can’t do something like this at 80.’
However, this wasn’t the first item on Moira’s bucket list – she has already ticked off seeing Ronan Keating live and watching a Scotland rugby match.
Her granddaughter and store manager at Specsavers, Karen MacDonald, said: ‘We were all going to do it and she said this was something that was on her bucket list. I think it’s great, although I don’t think the rest of the family will be so supportive.’
Iona Campbell, David Farquarson, Martyna Surowka, Kirsty Clark, Kerry McDougall, Leslie Reid, Toni MacIntyre and Lauren Williams-Bale will also abseil from the hollow mountain with Karen and super-gran Moira.
All the money raised will be split between Oban Mountain Rescue Team and the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.
