SCOT­TISH As­so­ci­a­tion for Marine Science (SAMS) staff past and present gath­ered at the Ocean Ex­plorer Cen­tre in Dun­staffnage to pay trib­ute to honorary re­search fel­low Dr John Gor­don, who was re­cently awarded the OBE for ser­vices to science in the Queen’s Birth­day Hon­ours List.

Hav­ing moved to SAMS in 1969, the deep sea spe­cial­ist spent his en­tire re­search ca­reer at the in­sti­tute. Dr Gor­don, from Seil, is pic­tured third from left next to SAMS direc­tor, Pro­fes­sor Ni­cholas Owens, who con­grat­u­lated Dr Gor­don on his achieve­ment.

Pro­fes­sor Owens said: ‘You were known for your in­no­va­tive and ex­tremely suc­cess­ful re­search but at SAMS you also had the rep­u­ta­tion of be­ing friendly, al­ways will­ing to give ad­vice and al­ways good fun.’
