Ladies make history with Mull to Oban swim

-

For the first time in recorded history, a swim from Mull to Oban has been completed. Gemma Stewart, 34, and Gill Spink, 41, swam the 15-kilometre distance in just under seven hours. The pair took the plunge on behalf of the Roses Charitable Trust, which each year takes groups of young people from disadvantaged areas on holiday. So far they have raised £1,500. Gemma said: ‘ The swim was excellent. We have been training for it for about six months. We started off really early in the morning and it was calm and beautiful.’ Gemma and Gill, who both suffered from jellyfish stings, started swimming at 7am hoping to arrive at the war memorial in Oban by noon. However, after they got stuck in a current near Kerrera and ended up swimming for 90 minutes without moving, they didn’t arrive into Oban until 1.50pm.
