Youngsters star as fine weather blesses regatta

-

WEST Ardnamurchan regatta was held in fine weather last week as more youngsters than ever competed in this year races.

The 33rd event saw sailing races taking place on Thursday July 28 and inshore races on Friday July 29.

While light winds tested the yachtsmen’s skills, conditions were perfect for the inshore events.

Regatta chairman Alastair MacColl said: ‘Sea conditions here can be tough which might put off some of the more inexperienced young people but this year they turned out in force and showed some fine skills.’

The youngest competitor was Niven Peterson, eight, who took part in the boys’ doubles canoes and junior mixed doubles canoes and was awarded the Cameron Cup for his efforts.

Other notable achievers included Emma MacLachlan, 11, who won the girls’ singles rowing and took part in the junior mixed doubles rowing, Emma’s cousin, Stuart MacLachlan, also 11, whom she partnered in the mixed doubles. Stuart, with Ewan MacPhail, also won the boys’ doubles rowing.

Mr MacColl added: ‘Our regatta goes back many years and is very precious to us, so we are anxious to ensure that its traditions carry on into the future – and, if this is going to happen, we need to encourage young people to take part. That we had so many performing so well this year is heartening, and a tribute to those parents who are taking their children out onto the waters and teaching them safe boating skills.’

The good weather brought out crowds of spectators who, between watching the races, had more stalls than ever to enjoy in the marquee, including guess the weight of the lobster, a raffle for a hamper, and jewellery, woodwork, cushions, lamps, candles and paintings.

Following the presentation of prizes, Mr MacColl thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the very enjoyable day such a success. Competitors and spectators gathered again in the evening for the annual regatta dance, to the music of the Gunna Sound Ceilidh Band.

Once incidental expenses are covered, the money raised goes to the RNLI, the Red Cross, and to the West Ardnamurchan Jetty Association which maintains the Kilchoan jetty and the moorings available for visiting boats.

Next year’s regatta is on Thursday August 3 and Friday August 4.
