An­gus takes top piper ti­tle

BENDERLOCH piper An­gus MacColl has been crowned Over­all Masters Cham­pion at Glas­gow’s Pip­ing Live! fes­ti­val.

Mr MacColl, a crofter and pip­ing tu­tor at Oban High School, was com­pet­ing against the best pipers of this gen­er­a­tion at the an­nual Masters Solo Pip­ing Com­pe­ti­tion in the Na­tional Pip­ing Cen­tre on Mon­day.

Mr MacColl, a four times win­ner of the Glen­fid­dich Cham­pi­onships, came sec­ond in both the pi­obaireachd and the march, Strath­spey and reel cat­e­gories, fol­low­ing Fin­lay John­ston and Pipe Ma­jor Gor­don Walker re­spec­tively.

Af­ter­wards, the gold medal­list of the Ar­gyll­shire Gath­er­ing and North­ern Meet­ing was named over­all win­ner of the Masters Solo Pip­ing Com­pe­ti­tion.

Mr MacColl now qual­i­fies for the 43rd Glen­fid­dich Solo Pip­ing Cham­pi­onship at Blair Cas­tle on Oc­to­ber 29.

He was last year’s over­all win­ner, as well as in 1995, 2006 and 2010.

Now in its 13th year, Pip­ing Live! runs un­til Au­gust 14.
