Lerags bar is crossing all paws in hope of securing top dog title
MAN’S best friend has two new watering holes to try in Lerags Glen and Craobh Haven.
The Barn bar, an ex- cattle byre, at Cologin, and the Lord of the Isles on the Craignish peninsula, are vying for the title Dog Friendly Bar of the Year next week.
The two Argyll pubs face two other finalists – the Ben Nevis in Glasgow and the Steading in Edinburgh – at the Scottish Bar and Pub Awards in the Glasgow Hilton Hotel on Tuesday August 16, organised by DRAM trade magazine.
Harris islander Mary Macleod, who runs The Barn bar, said: ‘I have two dogs myself and it is very important to let dogs in and treat them well.
‘Dogs are treated the same way as customers. Dogs can sit in the bar and outside in our nice, big beer garden, and we make sure they have treats and a bowl of water.
‘It’s a country pub so it needs to be dog friendly, as most of our customers have dogs. If they were not allowed it would definitely be detrimental to our business. Very often we recognise a couple by the dog first.’
Islay’s Ballygrant Inn is also up for Whisky Bar of the Year, and the Island Bar of the Year is being fought over by Arran’s Drift Inn in Lamlash, MacGochans in Tobermory, The Old Inn at Carbost, Skye, and the Westford Inn on North Uist.
