MARTIAL ARTS

- WITH IAN RODGER

BJJ

Oban BJJ hosted head instructor Marcos Nardini’s BJJ barbecue weekend over July 30 and 31. Forty students attended from various affiliated gyms from Glasgow, Kilmarnock, Coatbridge and Oban.

The session on Saturday morning covered escapes and arm-bars and was followed by camping and a barbecue at Tralee beach where everyone got to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Sunday was an open mat where those who hadn’t over indulged from the night before got to roll and test themselves against other practitioners that they don’t normally roll with.

The weekend was a huge success with the teams all bonding and learning together. Coach Coogie Potter would like to give a special thank you to Nick Wesley and Atlantis Leisure who let the club use their barbecue and gave everyone access to their showers post seminar.

The squad training session on Saturday July 23 was a tough one attended by karate practitioners from Oban and Dunoon. Members of the Karate Jutsu Kai dojo in Dunoon made the trip and enjoyed the training very much, vowing to return for the next one.

The Caledonia Kyokushin clubs annual beach training takes place on Saturday August 20, a report and pictures will be in a future column. Craig MacLachlan’s training for Japan is going well with extra sparring sessions working with Mark Welsh. Mark’s help is much appreciated in the lead up to the World Tournament.

Squad selection will be taking place soon for the British Open event in London which takes place on October 1.

The Scottish Open event which is organised by Iain Rodger and takes place on February 25, 2017 has had its first entry in, the last event was sold out before Christmas the year before.
