Rain fails to dampen spirits as thousands flock to Skye Games

LAURA SMITH from Cairnie, Aberdeensh­ire, won the Hugh Gillies Trophy for best all-round dancer in the 16 and over category at Isle of Skye Highland Games.

Thousands of locals and tourists enjoyed the games in Portee last Wednesday.

Allan Stewart, secretary of the organising committee said: ‘After a wet start to the day a large crowd enjoyed the games.’

Laura won all but two of the events in her age category – Highland Fling, Seann Triubhas, Reels and Hornpipe – and came second in the Gillie Callum and Irish Jigs which were won by Darra Wood from Tain.

Molly Smith, also from Cairnie, won all the competitio­ns in the 15 and under category. She received the Woodman Family Trophy for being the best overall in her age group as well as the Rosemary and Alex McGuire Challenge Trophy for the best overall Highland dancer.

Isla McKenzie of Fearn won all the competitio­ns in the 13 and under age category, except for the Gillie Callum and Seann Triubhas which were won by Scout Knight of Huntly.

Isla won the Caledonian MacBrayne Trophy for the best dancer in her age group.
