MacIntyre crowned Amateur Golfer of Year

GLENCRUITT­EN Golf Club’s Robert MacIntyre has been handed the perfect lift ahead of this week’s World Amateur Team Championsh­ip in Mexico after being crowned Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year.

Thanks to finishing as the leading Scot (13th), at both male and female level, on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) at the September 9 cut- off point, left-hander MacIntyre has secured the coveted accolade.

With a record- equalling eight male Scots regularly populating the top 100 on WAGR this year, the Glencruitt­en player held off the challenge of Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup winner Grant Forrest (19th) and Connor Syme (23rd), the Australian amateur champion, to come out on top.

MacIntyre, coached by George Boswell, follows in the spike marks of the previous two winners of the award, Bradley Neil (2014) and Ewen Ferguson (2015).

‘I’ve just pipped Grant to the post, so it’s always nice to get another accomplish­ment like this,’ said MacIntyre of his award, having reached his highest ever world ranking.

JAMES Muir and Stephen Murphy won the Dennis Cathro pairs competitio­n at Glencruitt­en on Saturday with a better ball score of 55. Alan Jamieson and Steven McCuish were runners-up with a score of 56.Willie McAdam and Donald McGill were third with 58 points.

A four-man scramble takes place on Saturday. Fort William THE men’s medal final was played on Saturday September 17: Section one – 1 Andrew Brown net 72 (81-9); 2 Stephen Howden net 72 (84-12) BIH; 3 Steven Jamieson net 73 (78-5).

Section two – 1 Lewis Fyfe net 73 (89-16); 2 Marc MacDonald net 74 (89-15); 3 Lewis Corbett net 78 (98-20).

The senior medal final, played on Sunday September 18 – 1 Brian Gillespie net 63 (75-12); 2 Frank Sweeney net 67 (83-16) BIH; 3 David Martin net 67 (85-18).

The Ladies’ Budget Trophy, was played on Saturday September 10 – 1 Rosemary Macintyre net 72 (83-11); 2 Iona Cameron net 77 (96-19).
