There was a spirited response to our story about the zebra crossing on Soroba Road, near Lidl, which many people have classed as dangerous.

Charlie Jack warned: ‘ There is far too much happening in the immediate vicinity, for pedestrians crossing the road to be kept safe by a zebra crossing.’

Willie Reid lamented: ‘ The problem is that a lot of drivers in Oban think that a zebra crossing is a Banksie. The ones at tescos and Lidl are routinely ignored. Time to join the 20th century folks, never mind the 21st.’ Caroline Macarthur agreed: ‘Imme- diate area around new crossing is far too busy with signs, bollards, garage awning etc. Crossing does not stand out and is easily missed. Bad enough for local people who at least know it is there now. Will never be noticed by through traffic and tourists. In the dark it is even worse. An accident waiting to happen!’

Marie Archer countered: ‘How ever it will also lead to the safety of folk crossing soroba road who have been traffic dodging for months when the road was a single lane hoping that some kind drivers would wave them over!!’

Joseph Cormack Snr wrote: ‘Unfor- tunately I think there is a high risk of a pedestrian casualty , there is just to much road marking instructions in a short small area.’

Hazel Kelso suggested: ‘I’d rather cross at the islands! Not convinced people will stop at the zebra crossing!’

Christine Fox warned: ‘Not sure pedestrians know how to use them sure they cross anywhere at tesco and don’t use the crossing!’ Bill L Harvey said: ‘ Leave at least an hour to get through Oban at busy times this is just going to lead to frustration and delay.’
