BJJ TRAINING continues with classes various available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The club regularly takes part in national and internatio­nal events with great success.

Anyone interested in learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu should contact club coach Iain ‘Coogie’ Potter on coogiepots@gmail. com. Kyokushink­ai Karate Club coach Iain Rodger is gearing up as coach for the GB karate team’s trip to Japan for the world tournament.

The team (which includes Oban’s Craig Maclachlan) head out on October 19 for the weigh-in on the 21st and fighting takes place on 22nd and 23rd.

Elsewhere, Oban junior fighter Darryl McLaughlin is in preparatio­n to represent his country at the National Junior Championsh­ips in London on November 13.

Darryl will be the sole representa­tive for Scotland at the event. Darryl also helps coach beginners in the children’s classes.

The classes take place in Oban every Thursday with children at 6pm and adults at 7pm. Other classes are available in Lochgilphe­ad on Wednesday evenings.

Shukokai Karate Argyll Martial Arts Club has awarded Zoe McKillop, Kenni Gray, Iona McCulloch, Shira MacAskill, Andrew Fraser and Sam Barker the status of junior instructor.

The students, who are all brown or black belts, have studied a six-month theory course and have had plenty of practical experience during normal classes.

The course brings out leadership qualities in the young people while also building up their self- confidence.

Classes continue as usual in Oban and Inveraray. The club’s next grading is planned for late October/early November.

Favourite technique – tornado kick. Favourite combinatio­n – right kick to thigh, left kick to body, right kick to head. Best tournament result – second full contact, first clicker ( points).

Ambitions – to fight profession­ally.

Training continues as usual, Wednesdays at 6.30pm for juniors and 7.30pm for seniors, Sundays at 11am for juniors, noon for seniors and women only sessions at 2pm
