Bid launched to raise church anchor

The Oban Times - - NEWS -

A COMMUNITY company is hoping to bring the story of a floating church back to life by raising its last remaining relic.

Sunart Community Company is trying to collect £ 6,000 towards the cost of raising and conserving the anchor and chain of the Sunart floating church.

It is believed the church was constructed when the Free Church broke from the Church of Scotland in 1843.

It was believed every trace of the floating church had been removed for salvage until local diver John MacMillan found one of the original ‘mushroom’ anchors earlier this year.

A crowdfunding page has now been created and fundraising events have been planned with the end goal of displaying the preserved artefact in the village of Strontian. To support the campaign, visit http:// www.crowdfun raise-the-anchor.

Worshippers from Morven walked to Liddesdale Bay on the opposite side of the loch and crossed by rowing boat to reach the vessel, which came with a vestry, a pulpit and a precentor’s desk.
