Town pulls together to save Tobermory fireworks

-

AFTER very nearly being cancelled due to lack of funds, the Hogmanay fireworks display organised to take place in Tobermory on Mull is now set go with a bang after a huge community effort.

Funded entirely by donations, the fireworks have become the highlight of the street party around the town’s clock to bring in the New Year.

An announcement was made last week from the organisers that there was a serious shortfall in funding, and unless £2,000 was raised the fireworks would not go ahead.

The town got to work almost instantly – a raffle was organised, with local businesses donating goods, as well as an online donation site being set up.

In less than 24 hours the target was smashed, with the excess going toward next year’s Hogmanay display.

Online fundraising coordinator Joanne MacLean said: ‘I had no doubt that our great community would pull together and raise the necessary funds. The £2,000 target was achieved within nine hours!

‘Thank you to everyone who donated, and continues to donate.’

One of the organisers of the fireworks, Geoffrey Gallagher added: ‘ What a fantastic community we live in – there are far too many businesses and people to thank – and we can now look forward to giving everyone in the town a real show.’

Donations can still be made via ju stgiv ing. com/ crowdfunding / joanne-maclean- 4.

The street party kicks off around 10pm on 31 December, along Tobermory’s Main Street.
