Friendly fixtures for Under-16s
OBAN Lorne Under-16s hosted Argyll rivals Kintyre and Highland visitors Lochaber at Glencruitten on Saturday.
The games were organised to give the Oban team some game time ahead of next weekends cup match against Marr Under-16s and also to give Kintyre and Lochaber a competitive fixture with both teams numbers growing over the course of the season. First up Oban took on Lochaber under the guidance of referee, local rugby development officer, Allan Wright. The hosts ran out comfortable 64- 0 winners over the course of 40 minutes of rugby. Despite the heavy scoreline there was some great play from the visitors, with a lack of match experience being the only real difference between the sides.
Next up both visiting teams played a short 30-minute game, with the contest finishing 24-22 in favour of Lochaber.
To finish the day, a combined Lochaber and Kintyre side took on Oban who put in a more pol- ished performance than the first game to run out 52- 0 winners. The day was a great opportunity to gain some vital game time for all the players who attended with more local games like these hopefully being arranged between now and the end of the season.
Oban players such as Euan Shearer, Kieron Morrison and Angus Neil impressed on the day with stand-out performances. This Sunday Oban Lorne Under-16s take on Marr RFC in the first round of the West Regional Cup Competition. The game will be played at Glencruitten. Kick off TBC.
Under-13 and Under-14 rugby
This Sunday Oban’s Under-13 and Under-14 rugby teams travel to Biggar RFC to take part in their first match of the new year. Both teams will be looking to build on a promising start to the season when they competed in the West U13 and U14 league fixtures.
Under-12 girls’ rugby
Oban will field an Under-12 girls team for the first time this Sunday as the newly-formed team travel to Edinburgh to take part in an Under-12 Girls Festival at Stewart’s Melville RFC. Girls rugby is growing faster than ever at Oban Lorne/ Oban High School, with at least nine girls taking part in the new S1 intake for the School of Rugby programme.
