Grand gesture for music society’s piano appeal
A CASH grant from Scottish Sea Farms has got Oban Music Society’s fundraising appeal for a new grand piano off to a flying start.
The existing Steinway grand piano is 80 years old and the society is desperately in need of a replacement, which could cost as much as £ 30,000.
The £ 5,000 sponsorship from Scottish Sea Farms has given the appeal a great start and the society is hoping to raise the remaining funds over the course of the next 12 months.
Jeremy Church, secretary of Oban Music Society, said: ‘We are delighted to receive this cash from the Heart of the Community Fund, as it helps us get the fundraising appeal off to such a positive start. We are hoping that other supporters will now come forward, as a new instrument is so important to our young musicians.
‘The piano is also used by the Mòd, the Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival, by the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival, the winter series of concerts, the Lorn Live Festival and a number of other musical events which take place in St John’s Cathedral. In total, about 500 people will benefit from a new grand piano being purchased, so we are hugely grateful to SSF for this initial support.’
