Spotlight on Taynuilt badminton star
HARRY Mobey is an elite Scottish junior badminton player and has the highest ranking of any senior or junior Argyll player. Harry has been a member of Oban Senior Badminton Club since he was in primary school.
He has also been supported by Atlantis Leisure elite membership and he receives sponsorship now from Yonex as well as Glasgow Life.
Harry is from Taynuilt and at the age of 12 applied and was selected for Glasgow School of Sport, which he still attends.
The youngster began playing badminton at the age of nine when he and his brother attended the PlaySport badminton sessions at Atlantis Leisure.
He enjoyed sport but was prevented from participating in a number of outdoor sports due to asthma.
Private coaching
Harry got a taste for the game so some private coaching was arranged.
The Taynuilt youngster entered his first tournament in Larkhall followed by the junior national championships, knocking out several circuit players who were part of the national junior team and securing a place in the last eight of the national tournament.
Harry’s progress since entering the school has been outstanding. He has gone from winning Argyll and Bute Primary Championships to being number one in the Scottish secondary schools singles and boys’ doubles events.
In addition, he has had huge national success in both men’s singles and doubles events, recently collecting six medals in the last two months across men’s singles and doubles events in England.
Big future
Harry, now aged 16, is considered a rising star with a big future in Scottish senior badminton.
Next season, Harry’s focus will be on men’s singles where he will be playing across Europe, also making his debut into the Senior Scottish National Championships and Grand Prix late November.
He will also be a contender for the Scottish Senior Squad prior to leaving school next year.
Harry’s ranking is as follows: men’s singles ranked fourth in the under-17 Scottish badminton league. He is currently ranked number 17 in the Scottish senior badminton league and is likely to finish with a top 10 ranking by the end of June. Harry has now entered the Senior World Badminton League.
