Wind-up radios donated to Sleat elderly
AN ISLAND radio station has donated 10 wind-up/solar powered radios to vulnerable and elderly people in Sleat.
Skye radio station Cuillin FM was awarded £2,500 from Scottish and Southern Energy’s (SSE) community resilience fund last year. The station bought the radios with some of the money to provide members of the community with an uninterrupted service throughout the winter when there are often power cuts.
The radios were distributed by Sleat Community Council with the first one being presented to 91-year- old Robert Campbell, from Toravaig in Sleat, by Kate MacRae, care at home worker for NHS Highland.
Robert said he was delighted with the new radio and even joked he was looking forward to the next power cut.
The remaining radios are to be distributed in the coming days by community councillors, care workers and community nurses.
Ruth Taylor, station manager at Cuillin FM, told The Oban
Times: ‘To date we have distributed more than 40 radios to elderly and vulnerable residents in our area via a number of local community councils, including those in Sleat, Gairloch, Sconsor, Uig, Waternish and Broadford and Strath.
‘They have identified people in their communities who would benefit from a radio and arranged for distribution. We’ve had some great feedback and hope the radios prove useful.’
Rob Ware, secretary of Sleat Community Council, added: ‘We are grateful to Cuillin FM and SSE for donating these great radios and if more are required, the community council will buy more.’
