Currie bags second place in championship opener
MULL rally driver Alasdair Currie kick-started his championship assault with a fantastic second overall. The 19-year- old is contesting the Fiesta ST Trophy this year in the BTRDA Rally championship. Currie and long term co- driver Steven Brown contested the Malcolm Wilson Rally in Cumbria last weekend and are delighted with the result.
‘This has been a long time coming. I am so pleased to get a solid finish especially from such a strong field of drivers. The other competitors have much more experience on gravel than me, so to be right at the sharp end straight away is a huge confidence boost.’ The duo didn’t have an easy day though as their brake pipe burst on the fourth stage which left Currie with no brakes. Fortunately he cleared the stage without any further damage and made a repair at service.
The Fiesta ST Trophy is a one make series which allows some of the country’s up and coming drivers battle for top spoils in identical cars. The championship covers seven rallies over England and Wales, the next being in Somerset, a 1,200 mile round trip for the Tobermory driver.
Alasdair said: ‘I hope we can get the funding to commit to the full championship. There is a lot more to come from me yet and I can’t wait to get back out in the car again soon.’
