Our online petition calling for new safety measures on the A85 between Oban and Connel has already seen very spirited support, with many of the signatories commenting on why improvements are necessary. Isla Kerr posted: ‘ That is THE most dangerous road I have ever driven. My mother, father and brother have all been in accidents (on separate occasions) on that road. Something needs done.’
Trisha Heron lamented: ‘ To many people have lost there life on this road. Lots of families left broken hearted with the way some motorists behave.’
Ethel Stewart offered: ‘ Very dangerous road and too many people have died needlessly.’ Pauline Clifford wrote: ‘I drive this road twice a day minimum, usually with my two young boys who are 4 and 2. I’m signing this petition as I fear for my family’s safety regularly when on this road. Too many tragic and heartbreaking accidents, improvements to the safety of this road is vital.’
Sally Davies, from Cork, said: ‘ You would see at least one of not two emergency call outs a day in the summer to an accident on this road.’
John Wilson advised: ‘Poor road design, and the expansion of Dunbeg will make this – already dangerous – road even more lethal.’ Valerie Marshall posted: ‘Drivers overtaking dangerously and generally people driving too fast. Frustrations mount during tourist season when locals are held back by drivers going
too slowly. Some challenging bends catch visitors out. There are also several openings to property along the route making access on and off the road dangerous.’
Anne Robertson recalled: ‘I have had a lot of scares on that road. Too many people don’t respect it, and visitors don’t know what to expect.’
Fionna Eden- Bushell said: ‘I know this road well - to catch ferry to Mull, and, as Blue Badge Tourist Guide, aboard coaches to Oban. Please paint double white lines from Connel to Oban! ’
Allan Mckie added: ‘I strongly agree with this initiative being proactive can save lives being reactive doesn’t.’
