Mull nurse revs up for rally

Louise works on Mull, where she pro­vides hands-on care and vi­tal emo­tional sup­port to people liv­ing with a ter­mi­nal ill­ness and their fam­i­lies.

Louise was in­spired to be­come a Marie Curie nurse in 2011 fol­low­ing the care her mum re­ceived prior to her death from breast cancer. She said: ‘It is an hon­our and a priv­i­lege to look af­ter people at that par­tic­u­lar time in life. You go through so many emo­tions. I can re­mem­ber crying but also laugh­ing be­cause we were re­liv­ing memories – just to have some­one say that it was al­right to laugh or cry was so im­por­tant, some­one who un­der­stood what we were go­ing through.’

Louise added: ‘We are very ex­cited. It’s a long way to travel AN ICONIC ‘Marie Curie Mini’ driven by Mull’s Louise Thomas and 16-year-old co-driver Emily Eas­ton-Page will be tak­ing on the com­pe­ti­tion at the Dix­ies Chal­lenge Rally in south Wales on Sun­day May 30.

The rally will be the girls’ first of many out­ings this year as they are com­pet­ing in the His­toric Rally Car Reg­is­ter Cham­pi­onship (HRCR) 2017, in­cor­po­rat­ing the Mini Sport Mini Cup.

Louise, a Marie Curie nurse, said: ‘We aim to take on the boys in the cham­pi­onship and raise vi­tal aware­ness and funds for Marie Curie.’

The car, a red and white 1993 Rover Mini, has been com­pletely re­built to make it com­pe­ti­tion ready and is dec­o­rated with sev­eral Marie Curie lo­gos. The event is part of the HRCR Old Stager Cham­pi­onship, in­cor­po­rat­ing
