RAASAY Primary pupils became marine scientists recently when they jumped on board the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust’s vessel the Silurian.
On Thursday April 27 the Silurian berthed alongside the pier so nursery to P7 pupils could enjoy a 90-minute workshop led by expert marine biologists and educators.
A treasure hunt around the boat, provided an insight into life aboard the vessel, kick-starting the event. This was followed by an introduction to some the key Hebridean whales and dolphins before the children went out on deck to learn how to scan for dolphins and use equipment such as binoculars.
The pupils then enjoyed a presentation below deck in the science station where sounds, videos and props were used to demonstrate the importance of sound in the marine environment.
Finally, pupils had the chance to ask questions before receiving their Silurian Scientist certificates.
A school spokesperson said: ‘Raasay Primary School would like to thank everyone involved for providing such an inspiring and memorable experience.’
