NEVIS HILLWALKIN­G CLUB

Sunday May 14

Aonach Eagach/ the Notched Ridge, Meall Dearg/Red Hill (Munro 953m) and Sgorr nam Fiannaidh/Peak of the Fian Warriors (967m Munro)

Park in the layby on the A82. Climb steeply on a good path up the SE ridge of Am Bodach (943m).

From the summit descend W to a sudden and exposed drop of about 20m and scramble down this on good holds.

A path continues along the narrow crest and a rocky slope leads to Meall Dearg (953m).

Continue westward keeping mainly to the crest. Most of this section involves scrambling on sound rock, not technicall­y difficult, but exposed in places.

The scrambling ends at the col E of Stob Coire Leith (940m). Ascend to its summit and continue to Sgorr nam Fiannaidh (967m).

To descend, head westwards over the relatively flat summit to NN134582. Descend the rocky slopes of the NW ridge and pick up a path, which continues down to meet the well-worn path up the Pap of Glencoe. Turn left and follow this down to the old road.

Transport required at the end of the walk on the old Glencoe Road.

This walk covers a distance of 9km and a height of 1140m.

The club AGM will be held at the Hub café on Fassifern Road, Fort William from 7-9pm.

The walk leader is to be contacted beforehand for meet up and start times. Car sharing usually possible and you can try before you buy. You can walk three times with the club before joining.

Friday May 12

Nevis Range – Wades Road Circuit.

Forest tracks and a section of General Wades Road make up this interestin­g circular walk. We should get good views of the North Face of Ben Nevis, weather permitting. Lunch/refreshmen­ts at the Pinemarten after the walk.

An easy leisurely grade walk covering 8.1km. Meet at 9.40am at Ben Nevis Highland Centre.

Saturday May 13

The Saddle, Sgurr na Sgine and Faochag, Glen Shiel.

A classic mountain walk in splendid scenery, with a grade 1, three-star scramble. Rated one of the best expedition­s in Kintail.

There is the option to avoid scrambling and also to have an evening meal before or during the journey home.

A strenous grade walk covering a distance of 13km and a height of 1490m.

Meet at Fort William woollen mill at 8.30am.

Thursday May 18

Carn Dearg (South East), Glen Roy.

One of three Corbetts in the vicinity of Glen Roy with the same name, this one forms part of a pleasant circuit with great views and a varied interestin­g terrain.

This moderate plus grade walk covers a distance of 14km and a height of 670m.

Meet at Fort William woollen mill at 9.15am.
