Vulcan Riders stump Seil pub

-

THE Vulcan Riders are not a bunch of clones of Mr Spock from the original Star Trek programmes, but owners of Kawasaki Vulcan Cruiser motorcycles. They invade Ellanabeich on the Isle of Seil every year in April to hold the annual general meeting of their club.

Five years ago, on their first visit, the island residents were a bit wary of the bunch of hairy bikers taking over the local pub, The Oyster Bar, on the Saturday evening, but word had spread about a pub quiz and it was enjoyed so much that the Vulcan Riders (Scotland) were invited back the next year.

The latest visit two weeks ago was up to the usual standard and the new landlords of the Oyster Bar were very welcoming.

The leader of the bike group and quizmaster Peter Truscott issued a special challenge.

If anyone in the bar, whether in a quiz team or not, could answer one particular question, he would buy a round for the whole pub.

Fortunately for him, nobody knew the answer to his question about military history in Britain.

The money raised in the quiz all goes to charity; this year the Lee Rigby Memorial Fund gained £90 and the RNLI collecting can also received generous donations. In the course of one year recently, the Vulcan Riders raised £460 for the air ambulance and £ 86 for the RNLI.

When asked if the bikers would be back, Peter said: ‘We are happy to come back next year and are delighted we have been asked to return with the now traditional quiz night.’
