A REMOTE island community trust has received planning permission to create a community garden.

The Isle of Rum Community Trust plans to build a poly tunnel and the garden. It also hopes to form a community allotment area.

Located on an old tree nursery within the grounds of Kinloch Castle, the trust has had the planning application accepted by the Highland Council for a temporary period until 2020.

The temporary nature of the application is because the garden will be within the curtilage of the castle, which is a listed building.

Fliss Fraser, from the community trust, told the

Lochaber Times: ‘We want to start building the poly tunnel as soon as possible. It will be split up into sections and people will pay for a wee plot where they can grow their own produce. We are also hoping to plant some fruit trees outside.

‘I think gardening is quite relaxing. Stress levels are not particularly high out here, but everyone can now enjoy eating what they have grown.’

Money made will be put back into the community trust, and used to purchase things such as the fruit trees.
