Oban Lorne entertain Hillfoots touring side

-

OBAN Lorne’s senior rugby team entertained a touring Hillfoots side on Friday evening in preparation for Saturday’s annual Mull 7s tournament.

The Oban side fielded a mixture of 1st XV and 2nd XV players and won the game comfortably with some of the best rugby played by the team all season.

Pleasing for the home support was the large number of young players in the team who have recently progressed into senior rugby from Oban High School. They included Rufus Stones, Alex Houston, Stephen Povey and Jack Strachan. Ten of the 15 Oban players present are all products of Oban High School’s rugby setup.

After the match, both sides enjoyed the social side of the game with the large Hillfoots following enjoying the use of the Glencruitten clubhouse. This game was the last 15-a-side fixture of the season for an Oban Lorne team. Plans for next season will be announced after the Oban Lorne AGM on Tuesday May 30 at 6pm in the clubhouse. Oban High School U14/15 28 Jedburgh 19 Oban U14/15s played host to Borders touring team Jedburgh Grammar School on Saturday at Glencruitten. The Oban boys won 28-19 in a highly entertaining and competitive game. Jordan Norman opened the scoring with a long-range try before Jedburgh responded with a try. Oban then produced their best period of rugby before half time and were rewarded with tries by Archie Spencer and Lewis Budge to give the boys a 21-5 half-time lead. The game became edgy for the home team when Jedburgh scored twice to bring the score back to 21-19. With only a few minutes left Oban were starting to hang on, but Angus Neil scored another try to seal the game with a well- deserved 2819 victory.

This was an excellent result against strong opposition.

This side will form the U16 team for next season’s campaign in the West Leagues.
