Kyleakin summer gala fun
FUN-LOVING families turned out in force on Saturday to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment at Kyleakin’s summer gala, writes Sara Bain.
Now in its 20th year, the annual event was again an enormous hit with everyone enjoying a diverse array of activities.
Festivities kicked off with the Skye Bridge Road Race at noon. Forty runners took part and race winners were Steven Worsley, Inverness, and Ellie Buchan, Aberdeen.
The gala fun began on the Corran at 1pm and a packed programme of entertainment included music from Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band and displays by Char’s Stars Zumba Dancers and Highland dancers.
Children enjoyed the climbing wall, bouncy castles, giant games, face painting, tug- of-war, target sports, wheel of fortune and a spot of Sumo wrestling. Let’s Circus, brought to the gala by Sleat events promoters SEALL, delighted the crowds with their juggling, acrobatics and circus skills.
Representatives of the emergency services gave out information and stalls selling burgers, candyfloss, seafood, ice cream and refreshments went down a treat with gala-goers.
Local group The Fulltones played out the event in style at the evening gala dance.
Gala committee vice chairman Vicky Nisbett said: ‘It was a great day and we’ve had some wonderful feedback from people saying how much they enjoyed it.
‘Although the sun didn’t come out very often, there were only a few light showers and a constant breeze meant there were no midges, which is always a plus.
‘The committee wishes to say a massive thank you to everyone who made the gala happen: the planners and organisers; those who spend days setting up and clearing away; those who give their time to run stalls and attractions, provide food and drinks; the volunteers who keep everyone safe by stewarding and all the performers. We would also like to thank everyone who came along to enjoy the gala and support our efforts to raise funds for our community minibus.’
