Money-sav­ing ideas the coun­cil can adopt

Sir, Surely the prob­lem with Ar­gyll and Bute Coun­cil is not that we pay their top staff too much. Isn’t the is­sue re­ally that we must pay more to find peo­ple who know about busi­ness and live in the 21st cen­tury?

The lo­cal au­thor­ity would save money by hav­ing video links in li­braries to coun­cil­lors and of­fi­cers to cut down on travel time and cost. UHI Ar­gyll Col­lege has this tech­nol­ogy and could pro­vide user sup­port.

Sim­i­larly, in­stead of pay­ing postage, us­ing email would re­duce coun­cil tax bills and other un­nec­es­sary costs.

The coun­cil could copy mon­eysav­ing ideas from other au­thor­i­ties and sell off Lorne House in Oban for flats and let staff ‘hot desk’ at other of­fices or work­ing from home ad hav­ing phone calls there. No trav­el­ling time and de­cent cof­fee def­i­nitely have their ad­van­tages and Skype al­lows ev­ery­one to keep up with the gos­sip and scan­dal.
