Salen buzzing with show success
HUNDREDS of people made their way to Mull on Thursday for the annual Salen Show, organised by the Mull and Morven Agricultural Society.
The Glenaros field was jampacked with people enjoying themselves – both locals and holidaymakers.
The show’s main attraction was, of course, the livestock. The real ones, that is, not the mechanical bull, which went down a treat with the children.
Iain Mackay’s four shear St John’s Kirk tup, by Castle Grant Jackpot, was crowned the supreme champion on the day, making history in the process.
Iain’s tup was the first sheep to win the championship in more than 20 years. The reserve overall champion was Glengorm with its six-year- old Highland cow with calf, Furan Gun Diul 14th of Glengorm.
And it was three years in a row for Robert Dickson, who not only took home the baking trophy, but also won the overall trophy for the second year.
Jo Weston, secretary of the Salen Show, said: ‘I think it has been a brilliant day.’
Highlighting all the help that people have given in order for the show to flourish, Jo said: ‘It has just been really great. Lots of people have come and lots of people have won prizes.
‘I just want to emphasise that the weather has been great compared to last year.
‘It has been so nice – people have been able to enjoy them- selves properly.’ This is Ms Weston’s first year as secretary.
She said: ‘I have not got much to refer to. However, some things have crept up, but people have stepped up and helped us out.’
Visitors to the show had the opportunity to get their hands on some award-winning produce, which was auctioned off towards the end of the day.
Carrots, kale and the biggest cabbage on the island were among the first- class vegetables sold to the highest bidder.
There were also a number of stalls at the show, with something for everyone – including a vegetarian paella, which was made by the Cooperative Paella Group.
