Cameron skips summer break in push for Scotland team

-

ALTHOUGH Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club has just reopened after the summer break, one boxer hasn’t stopped training over the last few months.

Fifteen-year- old Cameron Whyte has upped his training regime this summer as he strives to gain selection for Scotland for the European Junior championships in Bulgaria in September.

Thanks to a grant from Loch- aber Agricultural Association, Cameron has been able to travel to London to spend a few days training at the famed Repton Boxing Club - the most successful club Britain has ever known.

Cameron sparred for three days with four different partners who were all GB or English champions.

Cameron gained invaluable experience from his sparring partners and enjoyed great technical pad and bag work as part of his preparation. Added to this, Cameron also took part in a loosening session at world and Olympic champion James De Gales’ KO gym in Birkenhead.

Coach Niall Clark was full of praise for the Repton club. ‘All the coaches and boxers at Repton were incredibly welcoming and friendly and the sparring was second to none,’ he said.

Cameron will find out within the next fortnight if he has been selected to represent Scotland again this year.

Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club have resumed training after their summer break and are welcoming anyone with an interest in the sport to come along.

Open every night from Monday to Thursday, plus Saturday lunchtimes, the club offers anyone from nine to 90 years old a chance to improve their fitness, self confidence, discipline, self esteem and embrace a healthy lifestyle.
