-

BARRA Football Club will go down in history as the first team to take home Oban’s Bowmore Cup, after beating Mallaig 2-0 in the final.

However, they will have to defend their title next year after it was confirmed that the tournament will be a recurring competition.

Eight teams took part: Mallaig, Kilchoan, Barra, Bowmore, Oban Electrics, Coasters Bar, Oban Earra-Ghaidheal and Oban Saints u17s, with four teams making it through the group stages to the semi-final.

Coasters lost 4-2 on penalties to Mallaig after drawing 0-0 in the first semi-final and Barra beat Kilchoan 4-2.

Tournament organiser, Murdo MacKenzie said: ‘A great day was had by all with the football played in the most sporting fashion with only one yellow card being issued all day.

‘Deserved winners were Barra who beat Mallaig 2-0 in the final. The island club were well marshalled by their captain and player of the tournament Neil Sinclair.

‘Big thanks to the travelling teams, Barra, Bowmore, Kilchoan and Mallaig and thanks also go to the Oban teams, Oban Electrics, Coasters and Oban Saints U-17s who gave a warm west coast welcome to their guests.

‘I’d like to extend special thanks to the sponsors of the tournament Bowmore Distillery and the distillery manager David McLean.’
