Two brave the shave for charity

-

A WOMAN who beat cancer shaved her head, as did her hairdresser, on Thursday to raise money for charity.

Nancy MacDonald and Allan Mckechnie of Hair by Rutherfords ‘braved the shave’ in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Allan gave Nancy a haircut, before the roles were reversed and she was let loose on his locks.

Nancy MacDonald, who is originally from Luing, but lives in Oban, said: ‘I am actually a volunteer for Macmillan Support.

‘I am raising money for Macmillan. I have had cancer myself and Macmillan were absolutely brilliant.

‘I am nervous about doing his hair, but I am not worried about my own.’

Allan added: ‘Nancy popped in and asked if we would do it, so we agreed. I then said to her I will shave yours if you shave mine.

‘I thought that it would help to raise more money.

‘It was all right. Nancy did a good job. I expected it to be a bit sorer. It’s been a long time since I was this short.’

Oban Library boasts a ‘comfortable delegated space’ run by Macmillan Cancer Support. It has a wide range of information and booklets and leaflets, which are free to take away.

Every Wednesday there is a drop-in session from 2.15pm to 4.15pm, which is staffed by trained volunteers who are on hand to listen to worries or concerns and offer free confidential support.

They can also point people in the right direction of other sources of support where needed.

This is open to anyone, whether they’ve been diagnosed with cancer, or they are a family member or carer.
