Lochaber select win inter-district tournament

-

THE LOCHABER district under-17 squad have been crowned the best district team in shinty after beating select teams from across the country.

Select teams from across the shinty districts gathered at Spean Bridge for the Ferguson Transport and Shipping under-17 inter area tournament.

The competition not only pits the best young talent in these areas against each other but also provides an opportunity for players to stake a claim for selection for the North District under-17 squad to play their south counterparts at An Aird this Sunday October 1.

This year’s competition saw a round robin format with the four squads from Inverness, Lochaber, Skye and Wester Ross and Badenoch playing each other in 30-minute games.

The league matches were closely contested with all players giving a good account of themselves throughout the day’s competition.

Lochaber topped the league on five points, only dropping one point to the Skye and Wester Ross team, and were duly presented with the Ferguson Transport and Shipping shield by Colin MacKinnon.

Badenoch clinched second place, two points behind Lochaber.

David Pringle will coach the North Squad in the game verses the South. All selected players will be informed in the next few days and the squad will be formally announced once the players have accepted their place.

The Camanachd Association would like to thank referee Ronnie Campbell and Lochaber Camanachd Club for hosting this year’s event and Ferguson Transport and Shipping for its continued support of this event.
