Thursday October 12 A’Bhuidheana­ch Bheag and Carn na Caim, Drumochter

A high-level route on the boundary of the Cairngorms National Park, with access mainly on tracks.

Start from the lay-by S of the snow gates on the E side of the A9, NN639823. Follow the A9 S for 200m and turn E on to a track. Climb SE up the track to a junction just before a summit, 902m.

Take the right fork and head S on the track which by passes the summit of A’ Bhuidheana­ch, 879m, to reach a WP at NN658 788 at the end of the track. Alternativ­ely, head directly over this summit to reach the same WP. Climb the slope S on a faint path to the summit of A’Bhuidheana­ch Bheag, 936m. Retrace steps to the junction at the 902m summit. Take the right fork and follow the track NNE, over a summit at 914m, to its end at another summit, 914m, NN668816. Turn NE and head for the summit of Carn na Caim, 941m. Head directly W from the summit, down steep slopes, across the Allt Coire Uilleum, back to the A9. Alternativ­ely retrace steps to rejoin the track back to the junction and descend NW to the A9.

Grade: M+; Distance: 18km; Height to climb: 803m; Map(s): LR42, EX394. Meet at Fort William Woollen Mill at 8.50am. Start of walk at 10am. Leader: Alex Macleod 07808 924722. Saturday October 14 Salachan Glen to Glen Stockdale, Appin.

A pleasant cross-country walk through glens, forest and natural woodland.

Park at the forest track entrance off the A828 southwest of Dalnatrat, NM967530. Follow the track in to Salachan Glen for about 1½Km, take the right fork and climb to a sharp left bend and a junction.

Take the right fork and continue SW up the new track, along the edge of a clear-felled forest area. A gate leads out of the forested area to a junction.

A short detour may be taken up to the dam holding back the waters of Lochan Blar nan Lochan. Returning to the junction, follow the track uphill a short distance to its end on the watershed at NM969503.

Continue SW down Glen Stockdale following an ATV track, which eventually merges with the footpathLR marked on the map. The path becomes a pleasant track through the trees down to Kinlochlai­ch Farm and the main road at NM 936466.

Turn left along the A828 a short distance, over the bridge and take the cycle track to the CP opposite Appin Village Hall, NM938459

Meall Corranaich, Meall a’Coire Leith

Two Munros on the westward end of the Ben Lawers ridge. The start at almost 550m makes this a short round but the terrain is rough. Park at NN593416 (near large cairn) or at car park further on. Take path NE for about 0.5km then turn SE following a line of fence posts to reach the SW ridge of Meall Corranaich.

Follow this to the summit. Head north from the summit over a second minor summit and head NNE to the bealach and on to Meall a Choire Leith. Descend SW back to the cars.

Distance: 21–23km; height to climb: 1200–1400m.
