Thursday Oc­to­ber 12 A’Bhuid­heanach Bheag and Carn na Caim, Dru­mochter

A high-level route on the bound­ary of the Cairn­gorms National Park, with ac­cess mainly on tracks.

Start from the lay-by S of the snow gates on the E side of the A9, NN639823. Follow the A9 S for 200m and turn E on to a track. Climb SE up the track to a junction just be­fore a sum­mit, 902m.

Take the right fork and head S on the track which by passes the sum­mit of A’ Bhuid­heanach, 879m, to reach a WP at NN658 788 at the end of the track. Al­ter­na­tively, head di­rectly over this sum­mit to reach the same WP. Climb the slope S on a faint path to the sum­mit of A’Bhuid­heanach Bheag, 936m. Re­trace steps to the junction at the 902m sum­mit. Take the right fork and follow the track NNE, over a sum­mit at 914m, to its end at an­other sum­mit, 914m, NN668816. Turn NE and head for the sum­mit of Carn na Caim, 941m. Head di­rectly W from the sum­mit, down steep slopes, across the Allt Coire Uilleum, back to the A9. Al­ter­na­tively re­trace steps to re­join the track back to the junction and de­scend NW to the A9.

Grade: M+; Dis­tance: 18km; Height to climb: 803m; Map(s): LR42, EX394. Meet at Fort Wil­liam Woollen Mill at 8.50am. Start of walk at 10am. Leader: Alex Ma­cleod 07808 924722. Saturday Oc­to­ber 14 Salachan Glen to Glen Stock­dale, Ap­pin.

A pleas­ant cross-coun­try walk through glens, forest and nat­u­ral wood­land.

Park at the forest track en­trance off the A828 south­west of Dal­na­trat, NM967530. Follow the track in to Salachan Glen for about 1½Km, take the right fork and climb to a sharp left bend and a junction.

Take the right fork and con­tinue SW up the new track, along the edge of a clear-felled forest area. A gate leads out of the forested area to a junction.

A short de­tour may be taken up to the dam hold­ing back the wa­ters of Lochan Blar nan Lochan. Re­turn­ing to the junction, follow the track uphill a short dis­tance to its end on the wa­ter­shed at NM969503.

Con­tinue SW down Glen Stock­dale fol­low­ing an ATV track, which even­tu­ally merges with the foot­pathLR marked on the map. The path be­comes a pleas­ant track through the trees down to Kin­lochlaich Farm and the main road at NM 936466.

Turn left along the A828 a short dis­tance, over the bridge and take the cy­cle track to the CP op­po­site Ap­pin Village Hall, NM938459

Meall Cor­ranaich, Meall a’Coire Leith

Two Mun­ros on the west­ward end of the Ben Law­ers ridge. The start at al­most 550m makes this a short round but the ter­rain is rough. Park at NN593416 (near large cairn) or at car park fur­ther on. Take path NE for about 0.5km then turn SE fol­low­ing a line of fence posts to reach the SW ridge of Meall Cor­ranaich.

Follow this to the sum­mit. Head north from the sum­mit over a sec­ond mi­nor sum­mit and head NNE to the bealach and on to Meall a Choire Leith. De­scend SW back to the cars.

Dis­tance: 21–23km; height to climb: 1200–1400m.
