Corpach BSW Timber shortlisted for award

-

BSW TIMBER Group, which operates Kilmallie Sawmill at Corpach, has reached the finals of the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards, organised by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in partnership with Arnold Clark.

BSW Timber Group is hoping to take the honours in the large employer category, sponsored by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, at the awards in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Musuem and gallery next month.

Tony Lockey, group learning and development manager with the company, which has its headquarters in the Scottish Borders, believes apprenticeships brings local communities into BSW Timber Group’s workplaces, such as its sawmill operation at Corpach.

He said: ‘We are training our own ‘ready built’ people.

‘We offer good quality jobs, which are sometimes challenging to find in rural areas.’

The family-owned company has 510 employees and 19 apprentices in Scotland, including Scotland’s first female saw doctor. Saw doctors change, sharpen and service saws and carry out quality checks.

SDS chief executive Damien Yeates added: ‘This year we had a record number of entries for the awards and the calibre of the finalists is outstanding.

‘Employers like BSW Timber Group are tremendous examples of the success of apprenticeship training and it is great to see its personal and professional commitment to work-based learning being recognised in this way.

‘I wish them all the very best for the awards.’
