Gordon wins Argyll and Bute community coach award
GORDON Shearer was presented with the award for Community Coach of the Year at a training session at Oban High School by councillors Elaine Robertson and Roddy McCuish after being nominated in the recent Argyll and Bute Sports Awards 2017.
Gordon has been heavily involved in the coaching of mini and youth rugby at Etive Vikings RFC, Oban Lorne RFC and Oban High School for more than 10 years. Gordon has more recently become a huge part of the coaching set-up for the U16 boys’ and U15/U18 girls’ teams at both Oban High School and Oban RFC. His commitment and professionalism to coaching sessions has seen him build up a fantastic relationship with the players at both the school and the club helping them gain both individual and team success on and off the pitch. A number of players who Gordon has worked with over the years have progressed on to regional selection whilst others have turned out at senior level for Oban Lorne RFC.
The Argyll and Bute Sports Awards are supported by both Argyll and Bute Council and LiveArgyll and are aimed at celebrating the huge dedication and commitment of volunteers and coaches who turn out every week to provide the opportunity for everyone to participate in sport – Gordon is an excellent example of this. Gordon can often be found coaching three-four times a week as well as driving minibuses and coaching teams on weekend games, at times involving long trips away.
Gordon has been an inspiration to the young players he has worked with and he is well respected by both players and fellow coaches. His work with the rugby clubs has enhanced the developments of the School of Rugby Programme at Oban High School and the on-going development work at Oban Lorne RFC.
