Budding writers recognised in national contest
PUPILS at Ardnamurchan High School have once again topped a national competition, this time for their literary skills.
At the recent Amazing Animals Brilliant Science competition – organised by ARC (Amphibian and Reptile Conservation) and supported by Scottish Natural Heritage and The Heritage Lottery fund – three S2 students were recognised for their work.
Cheryl MacIntyre won first prize for her story, while Craig MacCowan and Archie Campbell were highly commended for their poems, earning themselves a place at the award ceremony held at Edinburgh Zoo on Saturday October 21.
Youngsters had been asked to draw a picture of, or write a story or poem about Scottish wildlife protected by DNA technology.
There were 15 endangered species to choose from and since a number of the pupils live in Ardnamurchan, it seemed natural for teachers Mrs Musset (art), Mrs Millar-Craig (science) Miss Wallace (science) and Mrs White (English) to collaborate and enter the pupils for the competition.
Some of the students’ pictures, even if they were not finalists, can be seen on the website, arc-trust.org
Cheryl’s story about a red deer, Craig’s poem about an adder, and Archie’s poem about an eagle meant a day out at the zoo where they enjoyed lunch and also caught a glimpse of the pandas.
