Christmas generosity: OLDS lunch and store collects presents for elderly

-

Oban Bay Hotel manager David McGhie, on behalf of Crerar Hotels, received the grateful thanks from Graham MacQueen for the group’s outstanding support of Oban and Lorn District Seniors by way of £2,415 cheque and providing a superb Christmas lunch.

Over the past 100 years, this event has taken place annually, organised by a committee originally known as Oban and District Old People’s Welfare Committee, which lapsed in 2006.

In 2006, Graham, with a band of volunteers, resurrected the renamed Oban and Lorn District Seniors committee (OLDS) and revived the now well established pensioners’ Christmas lunch.

Close to 100 senior citizens enjoyed a marvellous lunch in the Oban Bay Hotel on Monday. Customers of McCaig’s Warehouse can give something back this Christmas, as staff are collecting presents for residents of Eadar Glinn Care Home.

For the second year running, a festive stall has been set up in the Station Road premises and the donations will be handed out at the care home on Christmas Eve.

Marion Chamberlain, supervisor of the store, said: ‘We started it last year, as we thought it’s something to give back to the community.

‘Sometimes people in a home don’t have family and Christmas can be a lonely time.

‘It makes them very happy and lifts their spirits, so it has a positive community impact at Christmas.’
