Thursday January 11 Coire Ghiubhasan, Glen Etive

A pleasant walk along the banks of mountain burns. Pure clear water tumbling over rocky slabs and boulders, and an impressive hidden glen, steep-sided and craggy, surrounded by hills and corries.

Start from the bridge over the River Etive at Alltchaoru­nn, NN197513. Limited parking is available in the vicinity. Cross the bridge and follow the track to the Alltchaoru­nn Cottage, sadly damaged by fire in 2015. Follow the path S beside the Allt a’ Chaorainn. It curves E above the confluence with the Allt Coire Ghiubhasan, which it crosses on a single-plank bridge at NN199500.

Cross the bridge, climb the path up the bank to a junction and turn left. Follow the path SE in to Coire Ghiubhasan, through some natural woodland and along the bank of the burn. Continue up to the waterfall at NN 216492. Return by the outward route.

Sunday January 14 Beinn Sgulaird, Glen Creran Beinn Sgulaird rises from the sea at the head of Loch Creran. A traverse of its high-level undulating ridge affords splendid views of both coast and hills intertwine­d in this fascinatin­g landscape.

Start from the lay-by near Druimavuic at NN008451. Take the track which leads around the back of Druimavuic Ho, through a wood and on to the open hillside. Stay on the track, climbing to about 160m alt at NN014445. The route now ascends the SW ridge to a small summit at 488m then continues rising E to a summit at 863m. The ridge turns NE to Meall Garbh at 848m and curves up to the main summit of Beinn Sgulaird at 937m. Descend NE at first. The ridge twist and turns, then heads E down to a small lochan on a col, then up to the small summit of Stob Gaibhre. Continue the descent E for about 1.2Km to a ring contour at NN075467 then head N down a steep spur to reach the track in Glen Ure. Follow the track W down Glen Ure to the bridge at NN045480. Cross the bridge and follow the track around Glenure Lodge to the estate approach road, then NW to finish at Elleric CP. Transport required

Start at Inverarnan Hotel, Loch Lomond side on A82. Head N on the A82 and across to Ben Glas farm. Follow up the steep path beside the falls and continue along N side of Ben Glas Burn to Lochan Beinn Chabhair. Skirt the lochan and go NE up steep slopes to join the NW ridge of Beinn Chabhair. Follow the ridge about 1km to cairn and then to summit on top of small crag. Descend the NW ridge back to the col then continue over Meal nan Tarmachan and down to Lochan a Chaisteil. Descend over Meall Mor nan Eag and pick up the outward path.
