West too strong for Lorne

West of Scotland 60 Oban Lorne 19 West Under 18 Cup - Group D

OBAN Lorne U18 travelled to Burnbrae on Saturday to kick off their West Regional Cup campaign.

West started strongly and scored two early tries to stun the Oban boys.

After 15 minutes the Oban side settled and managed to get more of the ball.

Strong defence from Finn Charlton, Lorne Sinclair and Craig Cook helped to stem the attack from a well-drilled West side.

From an Oban lineout on half way, Sandy Bavington hit James Divers, who made a lovely break through the defence, beating a second defender. David Cameron was on his shoulder to support and gather the offload.

Cameron had the pace to finish off a lovely try against the run of play under the posts. Ben MacFarlane Barrow added the extra points.

West fought back and used the width of the park to expose Oban out wide and add another converted try.

The home side showed slick handling to ship the ball wide at every opportunity and the game plan worked when the right wing got under the posts to make the score 28-7 at half time.

The second half started with the West winger scoring in the corner after a good kick and chase. This was quickly followed by another converted try. Scoreline was now 40-7.

The Oban boys started to mix up how they played the more experienced side and had some joy in attack. It was through loose play in the attacking 22 metres that Oban recycled the ball quickly and again Divers linked up with Cameron to crash over the line and the extras added for 40-14.

This only spurred on West who went on to score four more tries. Oban managed to get one more score from MacFarlane-Barrow, who also added the extras to make the final score 60-19.

West were a well-organised team who deserved the points.

The next match for the U18 team is at home on Saturday against Glasgow Hawks.
