West District Division 4

OBAN men’s hockey team are now second in the West District Division 4 table with two games in hand as the second half of the season gets underway.

Saturday saw them meet Dumfries seconds in Glasgow – where both home and away games are played – for the first time due to an earlier postponement. The return match is only a few weeks away.

For much of the first half Oban dominated the action; with only a slight hiccup in the final minutes when injury forced a slight restructuring of the side. The passing and move- ment of the players produced gaps and ensured superior possession. However, when the whistle went for the break there were only two goals to show for this advantage.

Concentration

Dumfries had shown on occasion that they too could pass and there was always the threat of conceding if concentration wasn’t maintained. Andy Head in the Oban goal kept his wits about him as on a couple of occasions Dumfries had close range efforts saved.

The second half continued in the same vain and the momentum increased as the minutes passed. It seemed inevitable that the next goal would come and sure enough it did, followed by four more. Stuart Head scored a hat trick with Lewis Gibson (2), Andy Hodge, and George Gauley all appearing on the score sheet.

The defence was resolute and composed as Dumfries still showed signs that damage could be done. Finally however, in the last few minutes, they capitalised on a rare mistake scoring to reinforce the point.

Whilst Oban dominated this game the enterprise and capability of Dumfries means that Oban will again have to perform well on the February 24 if they are to win the ‘home’ leg – in Glasgow.
