STIRLING – Caledonian Marts Lts on Thursday February 8 sold 174 cattle, comprising 105 prime bullocks, eifers and young bulls, and 69 cast cows and bulls. All classes of prime cattle upheld recent late rates and many more could have been sold to a large ringside of buyers. Bullocks averaged 218p; Heifers averaged 218p; Young beef bulls averaged 205p; Young dairy bulls averaged 130p;

Beef cows averaged 142p; Dairy cows averaged 105p; Bullocks sold to 245p (twice) for Limousins from Balquharra­ge, Lennoxtown, and Learielaw, Broxburn, purchased by T Connor, Butcher, Troon and

T J Johnston Butcher, Falkirk, respective­ly.

Heifers sold to 248p (twice) for Limousins, both from Knockhouse, Dunfermlin­e to G Kirk & Sons, Butcher, Denny and Hugh A Black & Sons.

Bulls sold to 232p for a Limousin from Upper Spittalton, Blairdrumm­ond to W W Wales Ltd, Wholesaler, Kilmarnock, and to £1603 from the same farm.

Ewes (329) averaged £52.55 and sold to £93 gross a Suffolk from Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten.

Rams and feeding sheep (69) averaged £55.64 and sold to £102 gross for a Texel ram from 14 Airdens, Bonar Bridge. A spokesman said: ‘A mixed show saw strong and fleshy lambs meet a keen demand, smaller kinds easier. Top end ewes were dearer others at similar rates.’
