Double up for Taynuilt in Scottish Sea Farms primary indoor leagues

-

THE FINAL round of games for the Scottish Sea Farms Indoor leagues took place on Sunday February 4. The games took place over three age brackets, P3, P5 and P7 and acted as a qualifier for the P5 and P7 section which takes place at Fort William on Saturday March 3.

Games got started at noon with the Primary 3 and under section. The six competing teams comprised of teams from Taynuilt, Park, Rockfield and Kilmory and played round robin games five minutes in length. The aim of this section is to introduce the children to competitive shinty at an early age and promote participation in the sport.

It was clear to see that the standard of play has increased since the introduction of this age group and it was Park school’s Dunollie Diehards who eventually finished top of their group.

Next up the Primary 5 and under section took place with seven teams from across Oban and Lochgilphead taking centre stage. The quality of shinty was fantastic throughout which was epitomised by the closeness of the league before games got under way. However, it was Taynuilt that set the standard and came through a tough section and will represent the Oban area at the National Finals.

Finally the Primary 7 section was last up. Again who progressed from this group was anyone’s guess at the start but Taynuilt managed to get through and will represent the P7s at Fort William on March 3.

Additionally the Oban Area Development Group was delighted to continue its sponsorship with the Heart of the Community Trust. The cash grant from Scottish Sea Farms is in its second year of a five-year period, which helps secure the future of primary tournaments and the hire of venues.

The Primary 5 player of the tournament awrd winner was Matthew Sloss of Taynuilt who received the shield donated by Munro’s of Oban.

The senior player of the tournament award, the Ryan MacPhail Memorial Quaich, was presented to Rockfield’s Duncan MacEwan.
