Giving our young people a future

-

A FORT William employer is ensuring young people have good job opportunities in their local area, as it continues to focus on recruiting young people from Lochaber.

In recent years, Ferguson Transport and Shipping, with its head office in Corpach, has grown to become one of the largest independent logistic companies in the Highlands and islands, with operating centres throughout the UK.

The firm has recently taken on a further two apprentices in addition to those who are already in year three of their studies.

At the start of last year, Lewis Cameron joined the company as an apprentice marine engineer and HGV mechanic apprentice, while Matthew Weir is now part way through the first year of his apprenticeship.

Michael Murphy and Calum MacDonald are nearing completion of their training to become fully qualified HGV mechanics.

They are following in the footsteps of Sean McColl and Cameron Blackmore, who are both employed as qualified HGV mechanics, having completed their apprenticeships with the company.

Ferguson Transport, as well as operating more than 70 modern and commercial HGV vehicles and 170-plus trailers, has a maintenance depot based in Corpach.

The company also offers business administration and office apprenticeships ensuring that young people within the area are offered opportunities that open

the door to a successful and rewarding career within the logistics industry.

There are currently a variety of trainee business administration apprenticeships throughout the business.

Carhie MacKinnon – a third generation family member – has recently started a modern apprenticeship in business administration, and Robert MacInnes is also due to start the same course in the coming months based in the firm’s Kishorn office.

HR administrator Danielle MacEachan, is currently studying towards her CIPD Certificate in HR Practice in addition to receiving onthe-job experience and mentoring in the HR department.

Ferguson Transport and Shipping’s group managing director Alasdair Ferguson says the company provides a great opportunity to encourage young local people to establish a rewarding and long career within the logistics industry.

‘As a company we see the benefit of promoting young people throughout the various areas of our business providing secure career paths for young professionals,’ Mr Ferguson added.
