Pledge to raise £5,000 after five years cancer free

-

AN OBAN woman is marking the fifth anniversary of being cancer free by raising £5,000 for charity.

Susannah McMillan was diagnosed with a rare form of throat cancer aged 23 and just seven weeks away from passing out as a medical assistant in the Royal Navy.

Now she wants to give something back ‘to the people that helped me the most through my time of need’.

She said: ‘I was diagnosed with an adenoid cystic carcinoma of my submandibular saliva gland. I went from boxing training up to three times a day to not being able to walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like I was going to collapse. I had an operation to remove the tumour in Plymouth then I was flown back to Scotland to recover before starting my radiotherapy. I stayed on the Teenage Cancer ward in the Beatson hospital where the nurses couldn’t do enough for you. So to celebrate five years in remission I am hoping to raise £5,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Beatson hospital.

‘While I was in hospital I met a lovely young lady called Layla who was only 19 years old when she lost her fight with cancer and I would also like to raise this money in her memory.

She added: ‘I hope to raise more than £5,000 through different events over the next year. The first of these will be a charity race night at Soroba House, Oban, on Saturday April 14 from 7.30pm. I’m looking for local businesses to sponsor the horses or give donations for the raffle on the night to help me reach my target.’
